Rookie League Hosts MLB Play Ball Camp at Nathan Hale, Tulsa
Tulsa, OK – The Rookie League Foundation of Oklahoma continued its impactful partnership with Tulsa Public Schools by hosting a second MLB Play Ball camp together this year, this time at Nathan Hale High School. Nearly 50 young athletes, ranging from elementary to high school age, participated in the event, many of them being introduced to baseball and softball for the first time.
Held on October 19th, the camp was the first Play Ball event at Nathan Hale, following a successful session at Thomas Edison High School in April. For some campers, it was their first time on a baseball field, while most others had fewer than five years of experience. The camp’s goal was to provide access to the sport but also to build a lasting culture of baseball and softball in the community.
Nathan Hale’s baseball coach, Allen Medlock, was instrumental in planning the event, enlisting his own high school baseball players to volunteer and mentor the younger campers.
“It was a great success,” Medlock said. “The energy was incredible, and we’re excited to continue growing this event in the years to come.” Medlock said.
Nathan Hale’s softball coach, Sarah Bawden along with her staff and players, also volunteered, bringing an inspiring level of teamwork and enthusiasm to the event. Additionally, Memorial High School’s baseball team, contributed to the day by showcasing their competitive spirit that elevated the camp’s atmosphere.
The event received further support from Youth First, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting youth education and sports, which generously provided free books to each camper. This added a special educational component to the day, combining the excitement of learning baseball with the importance of literacy.
This Play Ball camp was one of six hosted by the Rookie League Foundation this fall as part of its Playball U series, visiting schools and universities across Oklahoma. The next stop for the foundation will be at Oklahoma Christian University in Edmond on October 25th and 26th for a high school showcase followed by a youth clinic.
Through events like these, the Rookie League Foundation continues its mission of expanding access to baseball and softball for Oklahoma’s youth, fostering development both on and off the field. With dedicated local coaches, volunteers, and community partners like Youth First, the future of baseball in Oklahoma looks brighter than ever.
