Rookie League Foundation Spring Season Underway

opener

Last Saturday proved to be a glorious opening day for Rookie League baseball and OKC Nike RBI softball. A total of 42 teams and over 500 youth participated in Rookie League games played at Wheeler Park in downtown Oklahoma City and Nike RBI softball games played at U.S. Grant High School and Southeast High School.

Approximately 400 kids from four to twelve years old are playing Rookie League baseball this spring. Rookie League is a development league geared towards introducing youth to the great game of baseball. The league includes tee ball, coach pitch and kid pitch divisions. Over 100 kids from 10-13 years old are playing OKC Nike RBI softball, a league composed of middle school students.

Both leagues will play every Saturday through May 18. Participants in both leagues will then be invited to Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark for a Rookie League Parade prior to the OKC Baseball Club game against Reno on May 25.

Rookie League Foundation Executive Director Carol Herrick says that the impact on the participants in these leagues goes far beyond the joy and promise of the opening weekend of play.

“Kids playing baseball and softball isn’t just about the game; it is about learning teamwork, building confidence, and creating lifelong memories,” Herrick said.

“It’s where friendships are forged, skills are honed, and dreams take root. These sports teach invaluable life lessons and instill a love for the game that can last a lifetime.”
